PressureCare Program
The Problem: The U.S. faces higher maternal mortality rates compared to other developed countries. In New Jersey. Black women are 7x more likely, and Hispanic women are 3.5x more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to White women. Research from the CDC and Commonwealth Fund has shown that high blood pressure is often a factor. Hypertensive pregnancy disorders, post-partum stroke, heart attacks, and hemorrhage are among the leading causes of death. 80% of these deaths are preventable. Furthermore, most deaths occur among women with a high school diploma or less, pointing to a lack of awareness about the importance of controlling blood pressure during pregnancy.

Our Solution: The Social Health X Foundation (SHX) has developed the PressureCare Program to address this critical issue. This pilot study solicits private individual and company donations. It works in partnership with nutritionists at two New Jersey WIC (Federal Women, Infants, and Children) Agencies in Trenton and Camden to identify pregnant women at high risk for complications due to high blood pressure, preeclampsia, or other pregnancy-related health issues. Our program ensures these women receive the support they need to monitor and control their blood pressure for their own health and the health of their babies.

Program Details:
  • Who We Help: Pregnant women in New Jersey enrolled in WIC with high blood pressure or a history of pregnancy-related complications.
  • What We Provide:
    • Free Medical-Grade Blood Pressure Cuffs to help women monitor their health.
    • Logbooks to track blood pressure readings taken twice a day
    • Health Education Materials designed to simply explain the importance of controlling blood pressure and symptoms to watch out for
  • Program Support:
    • Nutritionists at WIC Agencies help identify and reinforce health education during their check-ins with the women.
    • Weekly text reminders encourage women to measure and log their blood pressure twice daily and share this information with their healthcare providers.
Goals of the Program:
  1. Reduce pregnancy and postpartum-related complications and deaths
  2. Increase awareness of the importance of controlling blood pressure during pregnancy.
  3. Empower women with the tools and knowledge they need to improve their health and the health of their babies.
SHX's PressureCare Program is committed to reducing maternal mortality deaths by providing easy-to-understand information and resources. By giving mothers the tools to monitor their health, we aim to reduce pregnancy-related complications and deaths, as well as low birth weight and preterm births.
Our program not only supports mothers but also helps create a ripple effect. By empowering mothers with knowledge, we believe they will pass it on to their children and partners. This knowledge-sharing will help future generations prevent high blood pressure and heart disease, improving overall health for families.

Join Us in Creating Healthier Futures! Social Health X Foundation is committed to working alongside healthcare industry leaders and providers, social workers, community stakeholders, and other nonprofit organizations to support mothers. Together, we can make a difference in reducing maternal mortality and improving the health of families in New Jersey.
