Keeping Veteran Moms Safe Program
The Problem: The U.S. has one of the highest maternal mortality rates among developed nations, and in New Jersey, Black women are 7x more likely, and Hispanic women are 3.5x more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to white women. High blood pressure is a key factor contributing to these alarming statistics. Hypertensive pregnancy disorders, post-partum strokes, heart attacks, and hemorrhage are among the leading causes of maternal deaths—and 80% of these deaths are preventable. Research has shown that most maternal deaths occur among women with a high school diploma or less, indicating a significant lack of awareness about the importance of blood pressure management during pregnancy.

Our Solution: The Mission: Keeping Veteran Moms Safe Program by the Social Health X Foundation (SHX) aims to address these risks by working with healthcare providers at Veterans Administration (VA) facilities to help pregnant veterans who are at risk of high blood pressure and pregnancy-related complications. Through this program, SHX offers free medical-grade blood pressure cuffs, health education materials, and tracking tools to ensure pregnant veterans can monitor and control their blood pressure, ultimately improving their health and the health of their babies.

Program Details:
  • Who We Help:
Pregnant veterans receiving care at Veterans Administration facilities, particularly those with high blood pressure or a history of complications like preeclampsia, eclampsia, or other pregnancy-related conditions.
  • What We Provide:
    • Free Medical-Grade Blood Pressure Cuffs to help monitor health.
    • Logbooks for tracking blood pressure readings, taken twice daily.
    • Health Education Materials to simply explain how to control blood pressure and what symptoms to watch for.
  • Program Support:
    • Nutritionists and healthcare providers at VA facilities are integral in identifying at-risk veterans and reinforcing the health education throughout their check-ups.
    • Weekly text reminders encourage veterans to measure their blood pressure twice daily, log their readings, and share this information with their healthcare providers.
Goals of the Program:
  1. Reduce pregnancy and postpartum-related complications and deaths among veteran mothers.
  2. Increase awareness of the importance of blood pressure control during pregnancy.
  3. Empower veterans with the tools and knowledge they need to monitor their health and reduce risks to themselves and their babies.
The Impact: SHX’s PressureCare Program is committed to reducing maternal mortality by providing easily accessible, culturally sensitive, and actionable resources. By equipping mothers with the tools to monitor their health, we aim to reduce pregnancy-related complications like low birth weight, preterm births, and hypertension, which disproportionately affect veterans from marginalized communities.
Additionally, this program creates a ripple effect. By educating mothers on health management, we believe they will pass this knowledge to their children and partners, helping to prevent high blood pressure and heart disease in future generations. This knowledge-sharing helps to improve the overall health of families for years to come.
